Ride1Up All Ride1Up models — Error Code E12
Reviewed by certified eBike technicians · Last updated July 15, 2026
Quick Answer
E12 on Ride1Up = Throttle signal abnormal — throttle position sensor reading outside expected range
Severity: Check soon — throttle malfunction · Limited riding OK, diagnose soon
Error E12 on your Ride1Up indicates: Throttle signal abnormal — throttle position sensor reading outside expected range.
Check soon — throttle malfunction — Throttle signal abnormal — throttle position sensor reading outside expected range
Symptoms
- E12 on display; throttle unresponsive or provides jerky power delivery; motor may surge unexpectedly when throttle is applied; throttle may work only intermittently
Common Causes
- Throttle Hall sensor magnet shifted inside throttle housing
- Throttle wire damaged from handlebar impact or bar rotation
- Water or condensation inside throttle assembly causing signal drift
- Throttle return spring broken causing sensor to read partial throttle at rest
- Worn throttle Hall sensor after extended use
- Aftermarket throttle installed with incompatible voltage range
Fix Steps
Step 1: 1. Power off bike — check throttle rotates freely and returns to rest position with a distinct snap
Step 2: 2. If throttle feels sticky or slow to return: remove grip, clean throttle mechanism, and lubricate lightly
Step 3: 3. Inspect throttle wire where it exits handlebar — this is the most common pinch point during assembly or bar adjustment
Step 4: 4. Unplug throttle connector at controller and check for water or corroded pins
Step 5: 5. With connector unplugged: measure throttle signal wire voltage — should be 0.8-1.2V at rest, 3.8-4.2V at full throttle
Step 6: 6. If voltage is outside range: replace throttle assembly (~$18-25 from Ride1Up)
Step 7: 7. Only use Ride1Up OEM throttle — aftermarket units use different voltage ranges and will trigger E12
