Specialized Levo/Kenevo SL/Turbo — Error Code W04
Error W04 on your Specialized indicates: Motor temperature warning — approaching thermal limit (85°C internal temp detected).
Warning — motor reducing power — Motor temperature warning — approaching thermal limit (85°C internal temp detected)
Symptoms
- W04 on MasterMind TCU display; motor reduces power by 30%; power ramps back up after cooling 5-10 minutes
Common Causes
- Extended high-power climbing (>20% grade for 10+ minutes)
- Ambient temperature above 35°C causing reduced cooling
- Motor heatsink blocked by mud or debris
- Motor firmware not optimizing thermal management
- Riding in Turbo mode continuously without pedal assist variation
Fix Steps
Step 1: 1. If W04 appears: switch to Trail or Eco mode — reduces motor load immediately
Step 2: 2. Let motor cool 10 minutes — do NOT pour water on motor housing
Step 3: 3. Check motor housing for mud buildup — clean air intake vents with compressed air
Step 4: 4. In hot weather (>30°C): ride in Eco/Trail mode more, Turbo mode less
Step 5: 5. After cooling: error clears automatically, power returns
Step 6: 6. If W04 occurs repeatedly on normal terrain: motor thermal sensor may be faulty — dealer diagnostic
Step 7: 7. Preventive: climb steep grades at 60% max power, not 100%, to avoid thermal cycling
Always disconnect the battery before inspecting wiring.
